About the Khmer Language

Khmer (more formally known as Cambodian) is the Mon-Khmer language of the Khmer people and the official language of Cambodia. With approximately 16 million speakers worldwide, it is the second most widely spoken Austroasiatic language after Vietnamese and spoken by 1.3 million people in southeastern Thailand.

Being the earliest written and recorded language from the Mon-Khmer family, Khmer is spoken by 90% of the Cambodian population and is the medium of most social and professional contexts such as government administration, education and mass media. After Vietnamese, it is the second most widely spoken Austroasiatic language. The vast majority of Khmer speakers speak Central Khmer, which is the dialect of the central plain—the area where the majority of Khmer people reside. Even within Cambodia, regional accents exist in remote areas and are regarded as varieties of Central Khmer.

Khmer has three main dialects divided into standard Khmer (spoken in Phnom Penh), Surin or Northern Khmer (spoken in eastern Thailand), and Cardamon or Western Khmer (spoken in southwestern Cambodia. Translating business operations into Khmer can present businesses with favorable opportunities if the translation is done right and dialects are kept into consideration. Nonetheless, Khmer can be a key to opening great opportunities for businesses worldwide.
